When Is Time to Move to an Assisted Living Community?

It isn’t always clear when it is time to transition from independent living to assisted living. However, if you or a family member experience any of the following, it may be time to consider moving to an assisted living community in Richardson, TX.

  • Frequently falling, or difficulty with mobility
  • Forgetting to take medication, taking the wrong medication, not filling prescriptions or not taking prescriptions as prescribed
  • Requiring assistance with one or more ADLs, such as bathing, grooming, dressing and more
  • Finding it challenging to maintain housework, do the laundry or cook
  • Feeling isolated or alone due to a lack of social engagement
  • Inadequate eating habits – forgetting to eat meals, not eating a well-balanced meal

What is the Cost of Assisted Living?

A common question is what is the cost of assisted living?  After all, private health insurance and Medicare do not cover the cost for assisted living. Understanding how much assisted living costs can help you maintain control over your budget while getting the care, support and assistance you need.

The cost of assisted living can vary depending upon the community. Some senior living communities are “all-inclusive,” meaning you pay a flat rate that includes care, meals, access to programs, events, on-site services and amenities, and an apartment home. Other communities base their monthly rates on the amount of care that is needed. With these types of communities, residents are charged monthly rates and charged an additional fee for care. The cost of care is based on individual’s needs.

When you choose to become a resident at The Monarch of Richardson, there is a one-time community fee of $2,000. This one-time fee helps cover the cost of admission paperwork, preparing the apartment for move-in, and helping to maintain community spaces such as the dining restaurants, outdoor areas, and senior community apartments. Our monthly fees vary depending upon room size. We offer five different floor plans that allow residents to live in a studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartment. Monthly rates start at $4,100.

In addition to the monthly fee, a wellness package is added to your monthly rate. The Monarch of Richardson offers four wellness package options that provide varying levels of assistance. Wellness packages range from $400 to $1,550.

Does Insurance Cover Healthcare at Assisted Living?

Private insurance and Medicare do not cover the cost of assisted living or memory care. However, insurance may provide some coverage for specific healthcare services. Private insurance and Medicare can cover doctor visits, specialized medical care, prescriptions, surgical procedures and hospital visits. Coverage will vary depending upon your insurance provider and insurance policy.

How Do You Pay for Assisted Living?

Depending on location and income level, there are various programs that provide benefits and financial support.

Veterans Administration

For those who served in the military and their spouses, Aid & Attendance may be an option. This program, offered through the VA to veterans who served during a time of war, provides additional funding that can be used to help pay for the cost living at a community. There are eligibility requirements, such as serving during a particular time, income limits and individual health assessments, which must be met in order to get approved for Aid & Attendance.

Medicaid

Medicaid may provide some funding for assisted living. However, it depends upon which state you reside in. Texas provides coverage for assisted living through the STAR PLUS program. For qualifying residents, this program can cover services and amenities offered at an assisted living community such as The Monarch at Richardson. This program does not cover the cost of room and board. There are eligibility requirements that have to be met in order to qualify for Medicaid, such as income and property/savings.

What Happens When the Money Runs Out?

Every situation is different and therefore what happens when money runs out will vary depending upon your unique circumstances.

The majority of residents who live in Texas and who run out of money for an assisted living community find themselves applying for Medicaid. It does not cover all the cost of assisted living; however, Medicaid does cover a substantial portion. With the help of Medicaid, many residents can continue to live in an assisted living community when their savings and other funds are depleted.
